There are many legends associated with the festival of Rakhi. The rakhi festival is celebrated on Shravan Purnima (full moon day), which falls in the months of July-August in the English calendar. The festival is commonly known different names in different states. It is known as Rakhi or Kajri Purnima in North India. Nariyal Purnima in Western India (states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa and Karnataka). Rakhi Purnima is called Avani Avittam or Upakarmam in southern parts of India, in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and parts of Orissa. The day is also called Upakarmam by the Brahmins who change their holy threads on this day.
